ikey: I have version 4.37 and it crops just fine. Just drag from one corner to draw the box and hit Crtl-Y and done. There could either be a bug in your version or you might need to delete and download the program again.

I just tried cropping too and it works fine for me. Just draw/select your rectangle before you issue the crop command.

If that doesn't work, then I agree with battlestamps - reinstall.

YeaPolska, do you sharpen every scan, as a matter of course, or only occasionally?

I do not regularly use the Sharpen function, and I'm wondering if I should think about it...

(Anyone else can chime in, too. YeaPolska just happened to bring it up.)

Hi all,
I use IrfanView regularly to crop the cancels from envelopes or cut-outs. I put the delimiting lines very close to the cancel. This works fine for the right and lower sides, but at the left and a bit less on the top, there is always a margin more than I delimited.
Did I set something unknowingly and/or can I change this?
Thank you!

I don't use the programs being discussed here, but as a rule I've always heard that you should sharpen (in Photoshop I use "unsharp mask") as a very last operation. Everytime you adjust an image whether size, rotation, crop, you are rearranging pixels. Sharpening should be done at the end. I won't get into the varying degrees and modes of sharpening, in Photoshop there are many.

FWIW, the link in the tutorial to this tool https://www.stampcommunity.org/tuto...g-images.asp is no longer working/valid. Maybe is should be:https://www.irfanview.com/ , right now the link is to a cnet download url: http://download.cnet.com/IrfanView/...p=no&subj=dl

The rules with IrfanView are simple:
1. You always scan at high resolution and keep that file as a base to work with.
2. Do not use sharpen, it doesn't do anything useful in our case.
3. Use "save as" with a new filename so as not to kill your original scan. Memory is cheap nowadays.
4. If you rotate (or do anything like color adjustments) and don't like it, undo the step. Don't continue doing similar things until "you like it" as every step changes the original source.
5. Use jpg as file type and reduce the compression quality if the file size is too big (remember 4.). With single color stamp, a reduction to 20% jpg quality reduced the file size by multitudes without you noticing a quality degradation.
6.When reducing image size, use the Resample option.

IrfanView has sound math behind it when it comes to rotation/compression/color algorithms. The image editor is somewhat crap, I use gimp for that.

Interesting. I've followed all of those practices, except, I've always picked Resize and not Resample.

Which Resample filter would you recommend? (I'm almost always resizing downward, only.)

Also, and perhaps related, there is a checkbox for Use fast Resample filter for image shrinking. Do you recommend checking that?

My Version if IrfanView says Resize/Resample in the image tab so they make no distinction (?). I've never touched the resample options, I have them at: best (=slowest).

Okay, thanks. I have two radio button options. Resize or resample. I'll try resample for a bit and see what I see.

Note that thread was originally from 2015 and was bumped.

Topaz Gigapixel AI is the best image resizer and puts old resizing algorithms to shame (especially 'free' ones). I posted about this app, which has a trial version, in this thread

There is also additional information on digital imaging here
