I am not an expert in paper types but there seems to be a ridge and swale pattern with the apparent ridges seeming to join their respective perf point partner on the opposite side of the stamp. However, the perf points are not quite horizontal to one another yet the ridges still connect with them. A bit of a long-shot perhaps but could this have something to do with an experimentation with a perfing machine at a time when perforations were in their developing stage. I'm cheering for the "laid paper" version but wonder if the pattern didn't happen through an experimental perfing process.

Devils advocate-- Possibly to good to be true? Ribbed paper was used on early canadian issues . I have quite a few examples of laid paper from various countries and it is distinct but these are almost to strong . I'm also cheering for Laid but have that sinking feeling. Is there any chance the lines are impressions possibly made by something else?

Definitely not impressed and much different than normal ribbed. I will have to look for early ribbed stamps to compared but nothing like modern ones.

It is promising that they were housed separately from the main pile of queens and the previous owner was a very knowledgable and hardcore collector. That said, nothing from Canada was ever labelled so I cannot be sure.

To me those are laid paper. The first stamp is really nice, excellent centering.

Here is a reference link to Arpin Philately's page on some Canada beaver stamps' laid paper backs :
http://www.arpinphilately.com/blog/...tamps-apart/

Picture from above site:

Not being a paper expert at all, when I first saw the original post's picture I thought, on no, they have been stored in that magnetic glued lines type of photo album. You see what you know.

I had a fellow collector peek at them as well and all I said was "I just picked these up, what do you think?"

He replied "holy **** they are laid paper"

Lol, he's not an expert but adds some more hope to it.

I may get them certified but only if I can find a market for them or at least one of them, to make it worthwhile.

Where do you get them certified? APS? Cost?

Congratulations on your find.

The best place to get Canadian stamps certified is the Vincent Greene Foundation: http://greenefoundation.ca/
Information about their expertizing services and fees are available on their website.

Actually, the image of the two samples of the #31 together was first placed on this forum by myself (from a friend's collection) back in November 2010.

They were then "copied" by Arpin Philately without any acknowledgement, as they have done with most of their images on their blog. (I've had on-going e-mails about their actions).

Ya I'm torn on this one - nice to have in the collection but I mainly collect unused so it's sort of pointless to have. I'm debating asking for a trade for a few jubilees...

I was advised by an online dealer today that the well centered one could easily go for over $1000 with cert so it may be worth hanging on. Hmm. I'll sleep on it
