Before, abd at the turn of the 1900s, the post offices in Canada and the U.S. were centres for communication for a lot of people, not just for letters, but for general chit-chat as well. Moreso in the smaller communities and I am sure it was the same for the people of Europe at that time too.

As for today, major communication goes through internet, stamp using are unlike the old days, I believed hundred years later, majority of today's stamp will be very valuable.
