Hi all. many years ago I found some old Argentina stamps that puzzled me. I have now identified them as Buenos Aires stamps. In Scotts catalogue they specify that counterfeits exist. How would you be able to tel the difference. They do not say. Any help is appreciated. Here are some pics. Now this stamp is listed with a value of over $4000.00 (2009)

Hello Badge
I also have that set in my collection too and I can safely tell you that there is a 99 3/4% chance that they are reprints or fakes.
I have also seen other collections right here in town that had some as well.
Sorry for the bad news.

Definitely a fake, also wrong color.
The originals were printed very tightly pack together. If you see good margins, then it is either a fake or a reprint. Be careful of reprints, because they were made from the original plates. |

Yep I have a few as well. I especially love my lime green one - she's purdy!
Fun stamps to keep around though! |

I have one, very similar. Read a long article describing the various counterfeits, still thought mine could be genuine. Paid for the APS expertising service. Got it back with one word: "counterfeit." Nothing to explain how to know, wch wd at least have been something useful for my money. That's a complaint I have against both APS and Scott catalogues. They don't tell how to spot the fakes, or better: how to recognize the genuine examples of this, or any, potentially valuable stamp. Eric |

Perhaps APS and Scott think that if they tell people how to spot the fakes it will help people to make better fakes. Though of course if we don't recognise a fake the faker doesn't have to up their game. |

Your missing a major point about these stamps and many other stamps .
The point your missing is that most of these stamp were not made by Forgers but were made by stamp dealers to be sold to youngsters in approval packs for 10 or 15 cents per set . I know because that is how I got my set . When your selling to beginners you don't have to be too accurate on the stamps details . |
