While we are on the topic of papers used in Large Queen printings, I just received a 2 cent queen to compare to a few others I have. The paper is odd - feels thin, but also sort of slippery. The back side has a matte sheen to it, not dull like the wove paper. On the face, the ink is almost shiny. I wondered if it might be a photocopy or something but it looks legit. Is it possible this is the "paper 7, ivory, thin" shown in the Unitrade paper chart for large queens, and described as existing but with no catalogue number yet?

Possible to have a scan of please also? Thanks.

I cannot say yes or no myself, sorry, but if at all likely would be great to have it examined and scanned by Unitrade editor Robin Harris or he could direct you to the proper person to show it to, or by others knowledgeable in papers.

Finally found time to scan the stamps. The one on left in both scans is the new one with "slippery" paper. The one on right has been identified (not by me) as 24iv, Bothwell paper number 6, for comparison. I tried to photograph these at a low angle to show the matte lustre on the stamp on left but it does not come through well. Since I scanned these, I soaked the stamp on left to remove the hinge remnant and any possible gum residue that might be affecting the appearance of the paper but it still feels the same - thin and slippery.

Hello Stray Feathers
Your stamp on the right is definitely Bothwell paper. That is confirmed by the diamond pattern "watemark". By the way, it is really nice to get a dated copy of this classic issue as it was contrary to regulation for the post office personnel to use the dated receiver as a canceller.

Oh thank goodness. With the date 1868 and the mention of a Queen I thought you were all talking about UK and I wondered what I had missed all these years.

Well, I started this thread about 7 months ago. Still struggling, but getting closer. Thought I'd share some of what I've been doing.
- Read through the Duckworth book (again)
- Searched the BNAPs archive (http://bnaps.org/) for articles on the Large Queens (http://bnatopics.org/) and consumed those
- Found a specialized album for early Canada online and purchased a copy (.pdf format) (http://www.lulu.com/shop/john-m-wal...822292.html)
- got lost in their numbering system, which I chose to ignore (anyone have any clue what those numbers refer to or what reference they are using?)
- Built my own album pages, laying out the stamps and images from that album in the way that made the most sense to me (as it's not for sale, I don't think there is a copyright issue - would be like cutting up a book that I purchased for my own use)
- Included detailed scans of varieties when I had them next to the stamp for reference
- Mounted what I had, and used that to search the web for varieties so I could see what they look like
- Developed a warmer feeling towards the issue and it's varieties.

Some examples of the album pages I made up:

Beavers next, then the rest of the early pence and cents issues Probably will do the same basic strategy there. Anyone have any good references or other sources to help with these areas?

Chip

There is another fine article on papers used for the Large Queens written by Richard Gratton that appears in the May / June 2012 issue of The Canadian Philatelist (Journal of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada).

Thanks. I'll try to track it down.
I figured that hands-on would be the best way to learn - picked up this lot in an auction to play around with.
(and no, they didn't cost anything close to the "catalog" values listed.
C.
