Hi Puzzler, Fifia's dragons are South Korean, 2012. First post in this topic shows this SS on an ordinary cover. For comparison, you can find North Korean 2012 dragons at the bottom of page 5 :) |

Year of the Dragon 2012 issue from Japan (purchased on ebay): Two designs are offered with lottery tickets attached. 123123 just has to be a lucky number, but I'll never know... |

Thank you Sci07 !
The Japan left upper two stamps struck me as being touch stones perhaps. I don't know why. Stones shaped in a way and the dragon within them is brought out by the painting upon them? |

I agree Puzzler, I was also puzzled by those two designs :) Perhaps a cultural thing that we are missing. |

Hot off the presses: Here are images of the 2012 Lunar New Year: Year of the Dragon "Forever" stamp issued by the USA yesterday, January 23, printed by photogravure. From a USPS blurb about the stamp's design: "Combining original artwork by Kam Mak with two elements from the previous series of Lunar New Year stamps — Clarence Lee's intricate paper-cut design of a dragon and the Chinese character for "Dragon," drawn in grass-style calligraphy by Lau Bun — art director Ethel Kessler has created a culturally rich stamp design that celebrates the diversity of the American experience." - nethryk |

Christmas Island 2012 Year of the DragonReceived today on FDC from Akeela - thanks! A beautiful item. The text on the front says: Quote: In the race to determine which 12 animals made up the zodiac, the Dragon came fifth. He could easily have won the race, but stopped to make rain to alleviate a drought and to help the rabbit complete the race. Dragons are always willing to help those who are in need. And from the back: Quote: The Dragon is the fifth sign in the Chinese Zodiac and symbolises sensitivity and bravery. Although the Dragon can fly and might be expected to have come first in the Zodiac race, he only achieved fifth position. Because of his generous nature, the Dragon stopped during the race to create rain and break a severe drought and then stopped again to help the Rabbit, a fellow competitor, by gently blowing him across the river on a raft. The stamps feature the calligraphic symbol for the Dragon and its pictorial derivation. Those born in the year of the Dragon are generous, passionate, loyal and strong. On the negative side, they can be over-bearing and demanding. Dragons make ideal artists, entertainers, diplomats and politicians. Famous Dragons include Ringo Starr and John Lennon, Dr Seuss, Stanley Kubrick, Shirley Temple, Che Guevara, Salvidor Dali and Vladimir Putin. Dragon years over the last century were 1904, 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000 and 2012. Stamp and miniature sheet design: Dani Poon Cover design: Jennifer Sclazo, Australia Post Design Studio Edit: the outline and character on the stamps are actually printed in gold. Doesn't show up in my scan. |

Canada 2012 Year of the Dragon FDCReceived from my good friend Chris in Canada, with lucky red cancel. The issue is described on the back of the cover in English, French and Chinese: Quote: The Year of the Dragon begins on January 23, 2012, and ends on February 9, 2013. The fifth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, the mythical dragon represents power and signifies happiness and success. Those born under the sign of the Dragon are free spirits: imaginative and brave, enterprising and self-assured, irrepressible and gifted. Dragon "years" are marked by innovation, exploration and risk, ultimately culminating in achievement on a grand scale. Edit: Design: Louis Fishauf Illustration: Charles Vinh Calligraphy: James Tan |

Quote: Dragon stamp and also lunch, the 2011 Rabbit stamp below. Strange and wondrous indeed. Puzzler, you will also see a rabbit on the Christmas Island minisheet. There is some significance as it was rabbits year last year The Christmas Island dragon looks as though he is being carried in for the start of the New Year. Note too, there's a bird atop the branches, this signifies spring, which is what the festival is all about. |
