The national tree is one of the subjects of the Philippines various series of "National Symbols" stamps issued from 1993-8. These are small, domestic rate sheet stamps, issued in a se-tenant format. This 1995 stamp shows the narra tree. From Wikipedia, "Pterocarpus indicus (commonly known as Amboyna wood, Malay Paduak, Papua New Guinea rosewood, Philippine mahogany, Andaman redwood, Burmese rosewood, narra, angsana, or Pashu Paduak) is a species of Pterocarpus native to southeastern Asia, northern Australia,...China...Thailand, and Viet Nam...The hardwood, which is purplish, is termite-resistant and rose-scented."   |

On July 28, 1995 Japan issued a set of two "World Heritage" stamps. One of these stamps (Sc. #2451) depicts an old Japanese cedar, or Sugi tree (Cryptomeria japonica) which has been given the name "Jomon Sugi". From Wikipedia, "Jomon Sugi is a large cryptomeria tree located on Yakushima Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in Japan. It is the oldest and largest among the old-growth cryptomeria on the island, and is estimated to be between 2,170 and 7,200 years old.   |

Japan's April 18, 1997 stamp for "Philately Week" features the 1972 painting Daigo by Togyu Okumura (1889-1990). The painting depicts a blossum-filled, mature cherry tree, symbolic of the spring season. Stamp is Scott #2562. From Wikipedia, "His original name was Yoshizo. The name Togyu referred to a poem from his father who ran a publishing business...Okumura's works are characterized by their unusual, exquisite quality of colors through the application of white gofun pigment 100 to 200 times as foundation."  |

New Zealand Definitive Issue - Scenery March 27, 1996 Tane Mahuta, also called Lord of the Forest, is a giant kauri tree ( Agathis australis) in the Waipoua Forest of Northland Region, New Zealand. Its age is estimated to be between 1,250 and 2,500 years. It is the largest kauri known to stand today.  |

Indigenous trees are depicted on these Finnish definitives of February 5, 1991. The 2.10 Mk. stamp was issued in traditional format (Facit #1127 C.) and in a self-adhesive miniature sheet of 10 (Facit #1127 O.). It depicts the European rowan, or mountain ash tree (Sorbus aucuparia) which was sacred to the ancient Finns. The 3.50 Mk. stamp shows an European, or common oak (Quercus robber). This is the thickest tree in Northern Europe.   |
