I told them I wanted to pay a monthly subscription, rather than pay for it all at once.

A subscription basis is a dangerous concept, and probably pretty seductive to the publisher.

$20 per month, but for the rest of your life? That would be a nonstarter. Wanna stop paying? Stop having access, with nothing tangible left to show for it.

I hadn't thought about it that way. I was thinking more of getting continuous updates for a flat monthly fee. Perhaps a choice of either subscribe or buy outright?
