Maiko are teenage girls who perform dances, sing, and play music for visitors during feasts. In effect, maiko are apprentice geiko (geisha from western Japan). In Hindu and Buddhist mythology, an apsara is a female spirit of the clouds and waters. During the Roaring Twenties, "flappers" were young Western women who were considered brash for wearing skimpy dresses and excessive makeup, drinking and smoking, listening to jazz, driving cars, and for their sexually liberated behavior.
