I went to an estate auction, about an hour east of where I live, this morning. For auction was a huge collection of binders containing mostly US first day covers (two sets of tables about 40ft long, completely covered!)
I'm not interested in the FDC, although there were a few neat looking older ones, including some Airmail, but I managed to procure a book, very cheaply of postally used covers. Looking through I noticed a good number all postmarked from towns named Augusta, in 11 different states!
My daughter noticed the recipient was named Augusta Stange. Hello! I think we have a collection here.
Other interesting aspects. All were addressed in the same hand. Each has a different US stamp. Each were addressed in different coloured ink, usually matching the stamp. All had notations on the back in pencil when they were received. And all, except one, were dated October 10, 1948. The odd man out was dated October 9, but it contained a bonus, a card also with the postmark on it.
Cool Huh?
I think Mrs. Stange was making a little collection for herself.
AND NOW IT'S MINE!!
Here are a couple.

Here's the rest of what I'm calling the Augusta Collection.
Personally, I find this fascinating! Someone, Mrs. Stange or a good friend, went to a lot of trouble for her.

None of these envelopes were sealed, with the exception of the one posted Oct 9, containing the card. The rest were just folded in.
Also notice that those postmarked Texas, Kentucky and Wisconsin bear stamps honouring their states respective centenary (or centennial, depending on your point of view).

I just think it's cool.

I could be wrong, but somehow I recollect that you can send a self addressed stamped envelope to the Postmaster of each city and request a CDS cancel...

Jamesw, I am green of envy. This to me is stamp collecting.
What an interesting story. How did she pulled that off? Even with writing to the individual post offices she got positive result.
One was a nearly miss. Maybe it was her birthday? a special it was?

Wow, this calls for a schnaps. Thanks for sharing.

Fifia

I'm going to bump this 2012 thread, just because tomorrow, October 9, marks the 69th anniversary of the first cover in what I called the Augusta collection.
How's about a trip down memory lane?

Sadly, I wish I could stampman, but these are all I have. I periodically look through ebay (just did again now) but haven't found any more. I'll keep looking.
