Last summer I decided on collecting a South American country and I choose Brazil. I bought some lots and I end up having doubles. When I decided to auction them on SCF I went to the library to get the Scott 2012 cat. values. I compared them with the values in my Scott 2007 and was surprise by the increase. For example the lot of 18 mnh stamps from the 40' 50' 60' that I auction went up from $4.85 to $8.35, that's an increase of 72%! The other lot I put to auction was for pre-1900 used stamps and went up from $101.25 in 2007 to $122.25 in 2012, an increase of 21%.

I can't imagine the challenges of doing a full blown catalog like scotts , SG, Yvert and michael. The revenue is from advertising not catalog sales and to update regularly has to be a daunting task. I think the more the web plays a role the more information they have to consider and where many years of not adjusting prices is coming forward. Before internet they had to deal with maybe 500 auction houses (main ones) worldwide and now they have probably 10-50x's more information. The markets can now shift and go +/- faster than the catalogs. Actually surprised the catalogs have not all done full websites to get away from printed matter. There will likely be more countries that will have adjustments upwards just would be nice to have insider information on which ones.

I commented in another forum that I heard rumour that Latin America as a whole may be in for increased CV of their stamps. Maybe I heard right (?)

Out of all South and Central America, I would 'guess' that the Canal Zone, Brazil, Panama and Mexico are the countries with the best philatelic potential. In the past Brazil and the CZ in particular have nice stamps and good CVs anyway. This holds for a lot of the older ones as a rule.

Too bad I dropped this area some years ago but I still have lots of them as dupes now since I centralize on only 10 countries.

.

All of Latin America has "philatelic potential", especially the classic period. In my opinion, in the United States the most popular are Mexico in Central America and Colombia, Brazil, and Argentina in South America. In addition, there are specialist societies for all of Latin America.

To timbres667: Scott did a major increase in catalog values for all of Latin America over the past couple of years. Personally I use Scott mostly as a guide. In my area of Colombia there are issues that I feel Scott overpriced and a lot of areas that are under-priced. If one specializes in an area one gets a "feel" for price based on a number of factors. In general a world-wide collector has no option other than trust Scott catalog values.

No,no,no... I made myself a new years promise/decision to put special focus on South- & Central American stamps this year. So I want prices/catalog values to remain as is, or preferably go down so I can buy more for the same money. LOL.

I would imagine that Brazil is in a similar position to China & India, although perhaps not quite as marked. Increased personal / national wealth is allowing for increased spending in discretionary areas such as stamp collecting, and the prices are rising accordingly. Certainly China has exploded in value in recent years, and Tony MacG has the same to say about his Indian States collection.

I read, I think, in the Linn's Stamp News that in countries like Brazil that has a strong economic growth will eventually have an increasing demand for their stamps in the domestic market therefore an increase in values. But Brazil stamps are still cheap compare to China.
