On examining this 1876 Puerto Rican stamp, I see that counterfeits of the overprint exist. A closer look makes me suspicious.

Under the magnifying lens, the ink of the overprint and cancel look identical, as if they were applied at the same time.
Any thoughts?

This is part of what I call my 'Just because' collection. Stamps I keep in a separate binder just because I like them, so if it's not authentic, it's no big deal. Could even make it more interesting.

Hi jamesw

With the cancel?? covering up the points to check for a fake I don't know how you would tell if it is real or fake. I have seen a lot of stamps from Puerto Rico and have not seen one this heavily canceled.

If the cancel and overprints inks can't be seperated it may have been applied at the sametime. You could research what kind of ink was used to cancel stamps during era? See if if it was the same or not! I'm not an expert on these details!

I'm sorry, I don't know what that means.

warrehouse, I think it does look like it was done at the same time. The ink is a very rich dark black, and appears the same for both cancel and overprint. I'm leaning towards fake.

You have to wonder what the purpose of creating such a fake would be. It's not like it's hugely valuable.
