I am a long-time lurker in this forum and has finally decided to register for an account as I need some answers on a possible acquisition. I have been offered the opportunity to acquire the following stamp - Italy Modena 80 Cent - used & signed (probably by Mario Merone).

Just by looking at the scan alone, it is possible to determine if the stamp is genuine? Assuming that it is real (the buyer gave his guarantee), it is possible to determine if the postmark is real? According to the online Stanley Gibbons catalogue, the CV of a used stamp is about 100 times more than that of an unused one, so there is the real possibility that the postmark is fake and added to inflate the value of the stamps. Comments and answers would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, the only way to be 100% certain is if the stamp were certified. Personally, I have serious doubts on this one. For one thing, the frame line is almost non-existent at the bottom. Also, the ornaments in the corners are not crisp and look like square blobs of ink. Then there's the cancellation ... it just screams CTO. I do not believe this stamp is authentic. If it is, then it is a poor example. Use extreme caution with this stamp ...

Welcome, Keviian, from Lurkland to the Stamp Community Forum!

(the buyer gave his guarantee)

Is that a money back guarantee? In that case, it is meaningless for this stamp.

Is it a guarantee that the stamp is genuine? In that case, I would like to know what basis the seller believes the stamp is genuine. The supposed "expertizer" signature on the back is not sufficient evidence.

My understanding is that you cannot see the design on the back of the originals. You CAN see the design on the back for the reprints, because they were made on much thinner paper. Although some of the crudeness can be attributed to a worn plate, there are certain design elements specific to the reprints that are incorrect in your picture (e.g., there should be no bottom frame line at square in the bottom right corner for genuine reprints). Therefore, it is NOT a reprint because.

I can't believe it to be anything else but both a fake stamp and a fake cancel. If the seller is willing to offer an explanation why they think it is both genuine stamp and genuine cancel, I am willing to read.
