I am not sure I have this in the right section of the WW boards, but I believe the switch to "paise" came at a later date than 1940. I attempted to look this one up, but failed in finding in Scott's. Any help there would be greatly appreciated.

Any idea what the numbers and symbols stand for on this: Those things are driving me nuts, but I find them interesting.

I think I can make out the date of 8-6-58. I think that would fall into my thinking above.

Thank you guys and gals in advance.

This is cut off from an embosed Indian stationery envelop. That's the reason why you didn't find in the catalog.

Some of these are listed in Higgins & Gage catalog. Some are not. There are several websites that go into a lot more detail on these postal stationery items.

Thank you both for the replies and the inforamtion. I'm guessing Scott's includes so much more for the US because of the size, collectors, published here???? I will have to do some virtual traveling over to the postal stationary sites as I have quite a few more to figure out.

Your piece is a Higgins & Gage # B-23.
Most of these items were released in the late 50's to early 60's.
In the mid 1960's the Indian PO delegated these to general use as postage and were used up by the various satellite regional PO's by overpriniting the envelopes and covering up the Express mail emblems. The "Locals" can be ID'ed by the method of blocking the "express mail label and the overprint on the stamped value .. Here are 2 examples...

The top one is from Madhya Pradesh PO and the bottom one is from the Maharashtra PO.

There are 20-30 different varieties of these envelopes, and are a insteresting side collection.
Do a Inet search for Express Delivery Cover & Stationery. You may be interested in the results.

Regarding the currency as shown on the envelope:

"In 1957, decimalisation occurred and the rupee was divided into 100 naye paise (Hindi for "new paise"). In 1964, the initial "naye" was dropped. Many still refer to 25, 50 and 75 paise as 4, 8 and 12 annas respectively."

This name change is reflected in the stamps of those times.
