Has anyone seen a cancel like this on a Victorian-era Canadian stamp? I wonder if it's a precancel.

My first thought was that it might be a postal money order office number (MOON), which, I believe were the basis for the later precancel numbers. The problem is I don't think the numbers were in use when that stamp (Canada Scott#77) was issued in 1899.

Hi Jimjam

I think what you have is a stamp that was used fiscally or used as a receipt and this is why you only have a number. This was possibly used on a check.

Bujutsu, are you thinking "April 9, 1925"?

That would seem like quite a late usage, but of course I may be way off and it may not be that at all.

Hi Cjd

No,I was thinking more in terms of a reference number for bank usage only, not as a date. I have seen other stamps in the past, different eras, where numbers only were applied to stamps as a reference number. A lot of times these stamp were applied to checks as a form of receipt.
