BW: do I see a Port Arthur, Ontario cancel in there. If it is it was once part of the twin cities of Port Arthur - Fort William that amalgamated to become the City of Thunder Bay. Port Arthur was also on a Canadian stamp in a manner of speaking (hint - it was during the war years). |

Yes - Port Arthur cancel is there in the display and I do remember the amalgamation/renaming of the cities in 1970 only 42 years ago. Was news and known even in Calgary back then.

BW: when I click on your scan illustrating the shades google chrome's enlargement box jumps up with these lovely large images to scan across. Great stuff for Canada Scott#44 shades. Thanks for that! |

What is unique is that she looks West on this stamp, while she looked East on the other small queen

Gilles: congratulations! You are the winner. I'm sorry there is no prize. Only the comfort of knowing that in a spirited race to cross the finish line you came first. Thanks for participating. |

bwdavis - as every PC screen gives different degrees of colour, is it possible to identify the shade and/or catalogue number of each of your scanned stamps? It would be both appreciated and educational. |

Very interested in this thread. Am away from home and don't have my Unitrade with me but checked SG and see 4 distinct shade varieties of this stamp listed. As there are obviously more in the initial post here, I am wondering how you tell the difference between a true shade variety and stamps that have been discoloured or faded by time and or improper storage or soaking, etc. Another stamp like this with dozens of varieties is Newfoundland SG55 3 cent 1890 Victoria, also grey, and from the same period. There are several listed varieties of this one and a bewildering number of differences including some on a pinkish paper that I have read somewhere were tinted by sea water. |

Also for those that don't know- Victoria is facing west only on this issue to draw specific attention that the letter was registered at the 8c fee. |
