Puzzler, all your latest, and quite rare bird stamps are plotted on the map.http://g.co/maps/tpjra. The Pitta is the Noisy Pitta (Pitta versicolour). Its possible the Russel island sender of the stamps has all those birds in his vicinity.

I'm a great fan of birds on postal stationary so I was delighted to find this lovely card of the White-backed woodpecker( Dendrocopus leucotos) during a recent trip to Finland. Saw this woodpecker in the trees near the cottage by the lake .Cancelled in a pleasant lakeside town of Hirvensalmi.

Nice scan Akeela! I have these two series mint. Will look out for the third series next year. I didn't know about the hidden initial, will take a closer look! Any more story behind this? Initials of the engraver, I assume?

Sci-fi7, Here's a sample of what to look for.. I scanned the stamps at 600dpi then looked carefully til I found the initials
The names of the engravers: Lin Hong Song, Chou Mei Ling, Chen YuLing and Huang Lien Tsai.
The stamps were designed by Chi-jen Lai.
I've got similar scans of all the 8 stamps and can send them to you.

Scotzm, I love that multiple birds on the lady's hat and Isle of Skye cancel combination.

The Hawkshead cancel is a First Day of Issue cancel though, listed in the Stanley Gibbons catalogue. Pic from ebay:

Yes...looks like "Hawkshead" is machine applied... probably done at Tallents House in Edinburgh. Strike out Hawkshead as it was never near the place

Clear postmark from Hameenlinna, Finland cancelling a Eurasian Bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhul) on postcard of the same bird. Small is beautiful... this stamp only measures 2cmx3cm
