Here is an image of a stamp depicting parrots, designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon, and issued for use in French Guiana on June 2, 1947, Scott No. 207, SG No. 220, and postmarked in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni on August 18, 1949.

nethryk, that's a beautiful stamp, as are any designed by Gandon. I'd not seen it before and it got me rushing to the catalog to find there are 5 bird definitives and two air stamp with birds...now to the history of that region

fifia, here's a little explanation,
[Swedish ejderdun, from Icelandic ædhar-dún : ædhar, genitive of ædhr, eider (from Old Norse dhr) + dún, down (from Old Norse dnn).]
The small super soft feathers of ducks and geese are called "down" feathers. They are sought after for use in making quilts and warm feather bed covers. In German the word is federbetten.
And so the feathers of the Eider duck became synonymous with all feather bed covers.....
