In addition to Jim Forte's masterful online listings, some very useful books in print are Helbock's eight volume, geographically arranged by states, lists of all post offices. Published from 1998 to 2007, they should be readily available from literature dealers.
There are very very few typos and other errors I believe. I mean VERY few.

Thanks, Bill. I can see the significance of postmarks from post offices that are no longer in existence, and a book like that would certainly aid in the process of finding them.

An interesting read, indeed, wt1. It sounds like the old Allegheny post office building is still there (Now part of Pittsburgh), despite a massive redevelopment project in the 1960s during which time the remnants of Allegheny City was demolished.
