Hello,

Is there an easy way to determine if a stamp is made of Bothwell paper ? What are the characteristics of this paper type ?

Apparently the stamps without the watermark are distinguished by a distinct vertical weave giving a laid appearance, but I have never seen an example.

Not an easy task......

Here is what I beleive to be 3 different types of paper.
1- Bothwell
2- Normal
3- Soft white thick paper

I would have thought the "Normal" was bothwell just because you can see the mesh lines (diagnal criss cross) better, but showing them together it does seem that there is stronger vertical lines in the first image hence you are correct. I believe there is a thickness gauge but its hard enough gauging solid materials so gauging soft paper would probably require a microscope as well.

Yes, the thickness is also very different between them. The maybe Bothwell looks a lot thinner, almost transparent and the whole stamp design shows through the paper. The maybe thick soft paper is whiter and thicker.

I am also stating to think that the purchase mentionned here
https://goscf.com/t/22595
is all on Bothwell paper. This would explain why the 5 cent is missing
