On the Germany issues of 1948-51 #658-661:

There are two types Scott's calls Type 1 Four lines in stairs, and Type 2 seven horizontal lines.

Does anyone have a detailed scan of each of these types? I must not be looking in the right spot because I cannot find 4 or 7 lines on the stamps that I have.

Thanks,

I am a German newbie,
is this the stamp you refer to?
I think I can see differing stair numbers.

Thanks Rod,

I believe it is only on the larger High values 1, 2, 3, & 5M.

There are two easy ways to tell the types apart -- the number of stairs and the presence or lack of vertical hatching on the right tower.

Type I -- 4 steps, no vertical hatching
Type II -- 7 steps, vertical hatching

That makes sense now... You start counting at the arch.

Possibly before you were born

Stanley Gibbons Stamp Catalogue 1965
Part 2, europe and colonies.

These lovely old informative catalogues are
given away in Australia, because of the updated/revised numbers
on a lot of SG countries.

I was at a stamp bourse a month or so ago,
and a delightful elderly gentleman was working from a 1949
catalogue.
We had a great old chin wag together.

From a non-owners impression,
Michel looks like the greatest Catalogue out there.

Not always though. I paid $5 for my 1950 Stanley Gibbons Stamp Catalogue Part 2, europe and colonies. (Yes Rod, this was printed before I was born)
