Shipcards

I found this one to be a bit unique. it's a Shipcard / Postcard that I can't believe passes for Postcard rate. It measures 9" X 6 " or 230mm x 154mm and is a thicker kind of almost cardboard. I'm assuming there was no limit to what qualified as a postcard ? It did not go far as it was mailed within the city of Chicago in 1904.

That is one beauty of a card stallzer.

I have lots of ship postcards in my collection and I am presently trying to get them all arranged and mounted alphabetically in my albums.

I have a family album of postcards dating back to 1910 that I'm trying to learn more about. Alot from Sweden. Here's one of the US Navy ones. :) Thoughts? And sorry for using your post!

liss13, don't use the quick reply to post. Go to top of thread and hit "reply to topic". When that opens, below the message block is a small green camera with "Upload Image". Hit that and a pop up comes up with "File", hit choose and select your photo from your computer. Then hit "upload file to post". Finally hit "post new reply" and it should work.

Just came across your 2/16/2012 post regarding 1 cent rate on large post card. The card was not sent first class. If you look at the postmark you will see that it is only dated by year (no day or month, only first class mail is dated)). It was probably sent as printed matter.

Here's a few ship cards from my Mendocino Postal History Collection. The first card is of the Steamer Poma at the pier in the Harbor at Point Arena, postmarked Albion ( about 20 sea miles north of Point Arena ), I have a real photo 5" x 8" taken from further west of the same ship docked on the other side of the pier taken in 1897. I would have scanned it as well but it is matted and framed and is very difficult to remove. Plus I don't like messin with it! This view is from my Great grandfather's Point Arena ranch.





This next card is how passengers were loaded and unloaded at Mendocino bay. This is the Sea Foam, whose boiler is visable at low tide in the Point Arena harbor to this day. This card was posted at Salsig, about 12 miles south of Mendocino.





Salsig was up at the head waters of Elk Creek, and the site of a very interesting railroad tressle. The Salsig post office is visible to the right.



This is the train from Salsig on the North Fork Tressle, 484 feet long and 130 feet high!





this last card I may have shown before, but it fits this thread. This is the Steamer Fulton loading lumber by cable in Mendocino Bay. Postmarked Mendocino.

A lot of history in those nice looking cards.

Littleriverphil: You mentioned that one of the postcards was postmarked Salsig, California. I'd love to see the postmark, given that the post office was only in operation a few years (1904-1912) when it changed its name to Manzanita (1912-1915). I imagine both are very scarce postmarks to find these days.

I found the card transporting passengers by cable quite interesting. This is the first time I have seen this method for ship passengers, but, I am sure other ships used this method as well.
