Hi Everyone,

Based on the feedback I got from this post: https://goscf.com/t/23314 I decided to post a few of the stamps in the collection from China to get a feel for whether or not this is a collection I should sort through one by one (6 albums plus one box, left to me by my father).

So I'm here for your honest opinion -- based on what you see here from the China stamps, if you knew nothing about stamps, would you sort through this collection one by one or sell it off in bulk?

Most are from Japan.

Sorry about that, they were together in labels of China/Japan, and I obviously didn't know which was which.

Is this enough for a general opinion of the collection, or is there another country/region that can maybe give a better indicator on the value of the general collection?

All pretty common material, the 4th picture does have 3 from China, the 2 Junks (Ships) and the orange one lower left corner. As far as value goes, not much there to report, sorry.

Here is what I would suggest. If you have 6 albums of items, and do not want to search through each, then take the time to take a picture of each page and upload the pictures to sell the entire group on ebay. If you have anything valuable, good collectors will notice, and bid the price up.

It beats taking it all to a dealer and getting nothing for it.

Alternatively, post the whole group on Craigslist in your area and set a price of $100 or $150. You may get someone willing to pick it up just for the fun.

That said, some of the seasoned people in this group tend to be fairly dismissive of newbies. They can't believe anyone would inherit something with any value. If I had listened to them I would not have found 2 rare stamps of my Dad's collection....very unexpected and unusual, but my Dad was rich and spent money on his stamps.....so some sets have value. Even so, most stamps just aren't that valuable, and most collections aren't either unless they are very old and mint.

However, I became hooked once I started sorting through the collection, and now plan to keep a goodly part of it, and sell only what I don't want to continue to collect.

Strocksj, no, not at all. Members are absolutely honest in replies and rightly so.

It's very common world wide for newbies to think they have inherited (etc) rare expensive stamps, rarely their assumption is correct, yours 'may' have been one of these cases. (imo)

One thing collectors learn, it takes some experience (printing variations-$value within one stamp) before the Penny finally drops - selling reality.

Agreed Finches. Actually someone here started a thread not too long ago regarding the members here sugar coating opinions on Stamps. Many people stop in here on a one time shot thinking they've found the Holy Grail because they have stamps from 1945.

Sorry guys, didn't mean to start a heated debate.

I didn't think I'd inherited a fortune -- just wanted to see if the collection was worth sorting through or selling off in bulk.

Anyway, I think I have the general opinion that it's better off for me to sell in bulk, as I have no desire to pick up stamp collecting and it doesn't appear that putting in countless hours into sorting will yield much result.

Unfamiliar, won't hurt to scan/photograph any early U.S. stamps and post them here in-case members recognize variety's they recommend researching.

Lol, you didn't unfamiliar. We actually love it when new members stop in to inquire about new additions and finds. Most of the members goals here are to try and communicate that in Stamps there is so much more than value in front of you. The History, Culture, Beauty and so many more facets that should be enjoyed. One of my favorite Stamp sets is the Chinese Junks like you show in you pictures. Yes there is not much value monetarily but being as they are from the early 1900's and they are engraved and simply put, a lovely set.
