Took in a basic box full of this and that and amongst the mess were 3 small packets of 3 stamps each . The packets are clear sealed cellophane type and there is still actually crumbs from either cereal , cookies or chips along the folds. The satmps are CTO's and although I can't see all 3 in each package one is from Burkina Faso 1 from Lao, and 1 from kampuchea. Does anyone have a clue what these were originally packed in??
When I was a kid, one of the things that started me collecting (there were a couple of influences) was stamps given away in cereal. I think it was Muffets (Quaker Oats?), you know, those round hockey puck shaped chunks of spun wheat, that you dowsed in hot water to soften them up, and then quickly pour your milk on so you wouldn't get a bowl full of gooey starch. That would have been in the late sixties early seventies. Used to get a lot of Czechoslovakia and Romania and the like. Certainly lots of CTOs, though I didn't know what they were at the time. You are holding my childhood in your hands (did that sound wrong?)
Thats cool- I had shredded wheat in my head for some reason but don't personally recall them myself. Goes to show just how much the industry was pushing collecting back then. Imagine the dissapointment in todays kids if they got stamps in Happy meals- Although I could see a bunch of older folks (said with the most respect) giving up the big mac for the stamps in the happy meal.
It's funny you should mention this now. I was just saying the other day to my philatelic educator friend that it would be so neat to somehow get a write up about stamp collecting put on the back of a box of cereal. There are all kinds of activities and facts that could be used with stamps as illustrations. I'm thinking a store brand would be more likely to do this than a national brand. It would be SO awesome if stamps could be included in the box!!
