Especially for a great article about the artists, brothers Vasnetsov, along with a colleague from Estonia, so I prepared an envelope with a personalized postage stamps: Viktor Vasnetsov is a famous Russian artist, author of the paintings on folklore, fairy tales and historical themes. I would like to see how the U.S. philatelists use personal postage stamps |

Love that Sleepy Hollow stamp! One of the neat things about topical collections is the way they get you to look at your collection in a whole new way! |

Druon Antigoon was a mythical giant who guarded a bridge on the river Scheldt in Antwerp, exacting a toll from all who wished to cross the river. For those who refused, Antigoon severed one of their hands and threw it into the river. Eventually, Antigoon was slain by a young Roman soldier named Brabo, who cut off the giant's own hand and flung it into the river. Here is an image of a semi-postal stamp depicting Brabo performing this feat, printed by photogravure, and issued by Belgium on June 25, 1944, Scott No. B386. - nethryk |

Issun-boshi ("One-Inch Boy") is the subject of a fairy tale from Japan. While defending a princess from an Oni (ogre), the tiny but brave lad is swallowed alive by the monster. However, the boy defeats the Oni by pricking him from within with his needle/sword. The Oni spits out Issun-boshi and, as he runs away, drops the magical Uchide's Mallet. To reward him for his bravery, the princess uses the power of the mallet to grow Issun-boshi to full size; eventually, Issun-boshi and the princess marry. Here are images of a set of three stamps depicting key scenes from this fairy tale, printed by photogravure, and issued by Japan on June 10, 1974, Scott Nos. 1166-68. - nethryk Issun-boshi using a bowl for a boat Issun-boshi fighting the Oni The princess, Issun-boshi, and Uchide's Mallet |
