Hi guys

Don't know if this was done on purpose or not...The Scott # 381 Oil Industry stamp has English and French words for petroleum.

As you can see there is NO accent mark above the "E" for the French version....!

The accents on words that are in all caps are optional. They are generally only used when the word needs to be differentiated from an English spelling. For example "SALES" vs. "SALÉS". Proper names or company names are the only time they are required.

If that is the case mystic226, explain why some stamps have it and others don't, while there are NO proper names of companies used.

I guess is it up to the engraver since it is optional?

Interesting that air mail issue CE3 issued on Set 16, 1946 was reissued on Dec 3, 1946 as CE4 because of an incorrect accent on the second 'E' of EXPRES..circumflexed instead of grave.

I agree with Mystic226.
Today, the accent on a capital letter (french writing)is more in use than it was during the 1950-60, maybe to be more accurate...
