...on ShopGoodwill - the online auction site for Goodwill stores across the nation. Check it out...

http://www.shopgoodwill.com/viewIte...emID=9981282

I placed some bids on it early but on the last day or so it went way up to $726 by the time it was over. The description stated it included a stamp from 1847, but did not go into specifics. Once the price really started to climb I started to wonder about that, so I emailed them and while they refused to take any additional pictures, this is what they replied back with...

It is the Scott No.1 General issue Imperforate and is 5 cents. The face is almost rubbed off.

As you all know I'm new here, so my question is simple: what would you expect a book like this to go for? Did the bidder get a deal, or overpay on a gamble?

With only a limited amount of photos like that, I'd say the winner took a huge gamble.

The Mint ones in the photos looked nice but they are also very common. Nothing of decent value shown.

There's a significant chance that the "1847" stamp is merely a closely cropped 1947 reprint form a souvenir sheet (wrong color). I really do hope the winning bidder did well, but I DEFINITELY would not have gone that high without a whole lot more photos.

I'm a total beginner and even I knew better. I wish the winner was here or on another stamp board.

There's certainly some value in the nice hingeless album but in my opinion, that auction went too high.

I hope I'm wrong and just maybe it was stuffed full of classics.

Uh-oh - one more thing I just noticed - on the page with the Prexies (all the colorful Presidents from 1938) there is NOT a $5 on that page. All of the others are there but not the $5 denomination at the very bottom.

To me, that's a big red flag that if there's no $5 Prexie, then the odds are very slim that there is a 1847 issue or any other stamp with rarity or high value. Just a hunch, though.

In the vast majority of cases, this is correct. However, that Scott National Hingeless album will sell for $100+ without any stamps on ebay every time.

As for the final price? Definitely poor judgement by the buyer. There's just not enough information or photographs to justify the final price.

For whatever it's worth, my final bid was around $150 or so, and that was mainly for the album since I realized it was worth almost that much itself.
