Spent the morning at an estate auction. Among other treasures, came away with a stack of old canceled cheques (checks?) containing a variety of postal, excise and war tax stamps.
Knowing some of you share my interest in these I thought I'd share.
The cheques are from a company called Wells Bros. Amusement Co. and range from the 1920s to 40s.

This has an embossed war tax cheque stamp on the front...

...and 62c in additional Admirals on the back. It's quite stiff!

A 1935 Silver Jubilee issue #213.

A surcharged 1932 George V DieII.

And 16c worth of War Tax on a Debit slip.

Had a chance to sort through a few more of these, so here are a few more pics.

A nice combination of a 1930 2c George V 'arch' with an earlier 1915 War Tax.

The back of this cheque has a terrific rubber stamp showing what I can only assume is the bank building. The front of the cheque says Spadina and College (that's the intersection). I don't recall seeing this spectacular building there, so I'll assume it's been razed to make room for a condo.

Most of the stamps have 2c or 3c on them. Here's an unusual example of a 10c excise stamp. Larger cheque I suppose.

And there are some earlier cheques than I thought. Here is what appears to be the earliest, made out on May 26, 1915, with a 1915 Admiral War Tax stamp, SC#MR2. The stamp had been issued just over a month before this cheque was written.

I stand corrected. And so does the building. Opened in 1931, for a short time it was the tallest building in the Empire.

It's located in Downtown Toronto, on King St W, between Bay St and Yonge St., should anyone care to make the journey.

Sometimes you want to "search" for information about an image without knowing anything about its source -- there's a way to do this. Google requires keywords, but all this website requires is an upload of the image in question, including a copy taken off the Internet and saved in your "My Pictures" function in Windows. You can also specify URLs, but it works better out of My Pictures.

Over time, as "tineye" adds to its database of images, it will get more accurate and more comprehensive, but it already has over 2 billion on file. See www.tineye.com
