Would you be willing to PAY for a USA Philatelic Catalog rather than ordering one free in the mail or via download? It seems that is just where this new offering from the USPS shopping site is leading us. You can now BUY for $4.95 (on pre-order) a set of four of USA Philatelic Catalogs for Quarter 3, 2012, with covers featuring each of the four MLB players depicted on the set of upcoming postage stamps:

What a gimmick! The USPS now wants collectors to "buy" their USA Philatelic Catalog which presumably will contain the same content but just a different cover, and for $4.95 (plus S&H)?

I wonder who avidly collects USA Philatelic Catalogs so intensely that they would be willing to now pay for four different covers of their Quarter 3 catalog?

I wonder just how many of these USA Philatelic catalogs will actually be "sold"?

Will a random one of the covers be sent to all who are currently on the USA Philatelic mailing list or will that mailing use a different cover?

I wonder if this is to be the start of collectors now being expected to pay for the USA Philatelic Catalog and they will no longer be for free to order or to download?

It seems as though this is setting (yet another) "first" in demanding stamp collectors pay money for something as mundane as a "collectible" catalog.
