What would be a good size and magnification for a magnifying glass?

MK, I use an acrylic magnifying dome. You can get them online at places like MysticStamps.com, or if you have a Hobby Lobby store near you they carry them for about $14. It is about a 14x mag. and has a concave bottom so you can sit it right down over the stamps and it won't harm them. I love mine because you just lay your stamp on the table, or leave it in your album, and put the dome right on top of it and there is no hassel of trying to focus it.

That 14X sounds great. I have an 8X Agfa Loupe (of the kind used for looking at color slides on a light box) that I use for checking detail. You just place it an whatever you want to see, just like the one Cimarron has. For an overall look, such as checking condition (e.g., is that a tiny tear?), I use a standard magnifying glass, probably 2X. You might be able to pick something like that up at a dollar store. Check where they keep the pens and pencils and home office type items.

I find, the best magnifying glass, is the one that is
part of my Swiss Army Knife.

It serves my needs to a tee

All good answers. Like Cimmaron, I use a dome, although mine is small and portable. I definitely need something just to see the dad burn things!
