This is my first posting. I have been looking at my old stamp album from 50 years ago, and with my sources the usual "Approval" company suspects. What I have been doing is to compare stamps from it to stamps selling on e-Bay.

On e-Bay I found the following listed: http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHINA-Dr-SY...em1e6f5a2a63 Buy it now at $2,200. The description is meaningless to me.

In the 2008 catalog I see what I believe to be the same stamp China 690 A37 for .20 cents.

So what am I missing in trying to compare these stamps? Is the e-Bay listing a scam? I think my stamp is worth .20.

Help
And now hopefully I have uploaded my stamp.

The seller is living in Dreamland. The Chan catalogue prices the stamp at $HK1.

Welcome to the forum gmims

You are not the first, or will be the last, to post on this kind of topic.

I guess ther best way I can answer this is by using one word, and that is 'knowledge'. Obviously, the seller for this stamp does not know the facts and has not done the research, or, is trying to make a killing at the expense of a novice or un-informed collector.

I think the one posted on ebay is listed as a re-entry error, don't know if that really justifies the asking price though.

As, I suspected. What is a re-entry error?

And being as his experience selling stamps on ebay now sits at 1 total, I probably wouldn't assume that this person knows stamps. I see nowhere where he lists a re-entry error.

I don't see any reference to a re-entry in the listing on ebay either, and no re-entry is listed in Chan.

Most likely the seller has simply been carried away by the high face value of the surcharge - and doesn't realise that China was suffering from hyperinflation at the time.

I have had some success at least in purchases of stamps on e-Bay. I became interested in "color shifts." Of course, the majors go at a high price, and in a lot of cases the minor ones don't seem to get noticed. So in the minor color shift area on this stamp, I have the plane flying high (barely into the margin), the plane "flying into air", and a minor low shift to the right.

In the Pan American series I have a block of the train "flying high" and several singles of the same. All MNH. I just picked up the the 1 cent sinking ship. MNH.

This interest came up when I worked with an investor on selling a "Fast Jenny". I made about $900 on the deal.

So maybe there is a market for variations? If larger sellers are promoting these, it seems to make sense to buy in when the price is right. The C11 aren't necessarily going anywhere, but the Pan Americans I purchased at least in catalog value are worth more than I paid for them.

Since I am new here perhaps I should have posted this on a different topic?

Back to the China stamp.

So, maybe I should list this stamp on e-Bay for say $20 without making any claims other than the scan and condition of the stamp.

Would this be a challenge to the other sellers and their overpricing?

Should I do it?

$20? The stamp is only worth 20 cents (US).

Leave the idiot who listed the stamp to his or her own devices, and please don't clutter up ebay with any more nonsense listings

the person selling that stamp on ebay is an idiot.
The stamp is almost worthless, .25 in the cats.
I wouldn't embarrass yourself by listing it at 20.00 or even 1.00
by listing at 20.00 you will just let all the other collectors know, that you don't know what you are doing.

That's a good point.

I guess I could list as a Buy It Now for .20 cents--stating that is the Scott Catalog value. I would charge minimum postage.

I just like to expose frauds......

Sorry, Rod, but both stamps are Type III with top frame line fully shaded with vertical lines. The difference between the 2 stamps you show are Type III without secret mark (left stamp, #9) and Type III with secret mark (right stamp, #10).
