Can anyone tell me what the difference is between this series of stamps starting with #705/781?

The series from #705 have a background that is more solid whereas the background on the series from #781 are somewhat 'blotchy' or 'mottled'. That is your best clue, even more than the perfs because they varied between the different face values. Both sets had stamps with perforations of either 13.0 x 12.5, or 12.0 x 12.5 and even some with 13.0 x 13.3. The perfs can be confusing, so, it is best to determine by the solidity of the background colours.

Hope this helps

As an aside, the colors are mis-registered on both stamps, showing a white strip at the bottom(s) of the green leaves on the bottom stamp, and a sideways shift on the top stamp, most noticeable above the D of Canada.

Good point Doug22222. Ironically these stamps are more common with such color shifts than perfectly aligned examples.

I saw this older thread when I had the exact same question. When I looked at my two stamps, I first thought I was seeing an odd color for the mis-registered green in the 781 version (right). Then I also saw that both stamps were (C)1977 in the stem section, which is too bad because the 705 was printed in 1977, but the 781 was printed in 1979.

Another slight difference, though tough to see at first glance, is that the dark blue lines around all of the figures, touch one side of the frame to the other in the 781 version, but are completely clear in the 705 version (assuming it is centered correctly).

Notice also how the green color, once it goes beyond the boundaries of the dark blue lines, also seems to blend in with the mottled background, creating a new color. Not the best stamp I have ever seen!
