Hi - I inherited some stamps from Brazil which were purchased and used there after WWII. They are very interesting but I have not been able to find much info on them and hoped you all could help.

pics are located here:

You have the beginnings of a nice collection,
it may be a camera problem, but there seems to be
toning around the perforations, that could be a problem.

My advice would be to get an early Stanley Gibbons "America Asia and Africa"
catalogue, you should be able to get one off ebay for around $5
(circa 1965)
In that will offer you the stamps designer, printer and a little about the stamp

I particularly like the 40c stamp with the snake on it.

The set with the snake in it (its actually a snake smoking a pipe)is Scott #635 to #639 - 1945 commemorating the Brazilian Army fighting in Italy beside the US 5th Army. Set value $8.20 for mint and $2.20 used.

I have a hard time making out many of the others. Most seem to be roughly the same vintage - late 1940's - a few a bit earlier.

The stamp with Harry Truman on it (looks like you have a strip of 4) is Scott #673 from 1947 - worth 35c mint and 20c used.

Try your local library - they usually have a copy of the Scott catalog. My library has the a newer edition that doesn't circulate and a 2003 edition that you can check out.

Hope this helps.

Individual scans would help. After uploading them to photobucket simply copy the "img" code and paste it here. That way we don't have to click on external links.

Nice starter collection if you want to collect Brazil. South America and Central America stamps are usually low value when used by post. I collect Brazil and what I see on pics doesn't have great value, nothing to go to a dealer and cash it. Stay with us if you decide to collect Brazil or any other country. It will be our pleasure to answer your questions ans give you advices. Daniel
