I picked up this pair of Canada 53s this past weekend. The top stamp is easily a XF/Superb 95 and will probably grade at Superb 98 (possibly a Jumbo). I have never sent foreign stamps out for certification. Who certifies & grades Canada stamps? Brian

Not exactly true. The Greene foundation does expertise Canadian stamps, but it does not grade them. I think stamp grading is primarily a US thing. |

The do expertise Here is a quote from there home page The Greene Foundation has provided the pre-eminent expertization service for British North America philatelic material since 1976. During this time it has issued over 18,800 certificates of genuineness and over 4,180 certificates identifying lack of genuineness. It is a member of the Association of International Philatelic Experts (A.I.E.P.), the international body of experts all over the world.
From talking with many serious collectors of Canada they all say to use the Greene foundation, |

Very nice stamps Rileysan
One of my favourite Canadian sets has to be the 1897 Jubilee issue.

I checked out the Green Foundation website, but I do not see any reference to grading. Without grading, I feel an expertisers certificate would be worthless (in this case). Perhaps they do it without mentioning it on the fee schedule? Does anyone have an example of one of their certificates?

Wow. Please tell me you own that cover, Smauggie!?! I have volumes of stamps in my collection that, combined, are not worth as much as that cover!

Hello everybody
The Greene Foundation's mandate is only to expertize British North America stamps and related material. We do not express opinions with respect to grading or value. When a stamp is submitted for examination there can be only three outcomes: (1) Genuine in all Respects; (2) Not Genuine (for whatever reason), and (3) rarely the decision is made to offer "no opinion" in cases where we are unable to confirm and stand by a "good/bad" decision. Opinions referring to quality and price could lead to a conflict of interest and could potentially damage the Greene Foundation's reputation for integrity.

The Philatelic Foundation does not assign number grades, which is what I think Brian is looking for. |

PF actually does assign number grades. I wasn't aware that they certify and grade BNA until today. I think that's the route I'm going to take ...

Just a note of caution: I remember buying a stamp from a reputable dealer with a philatelic foundation certificate, that referrred to the wrong Scott cal. number......I considered returning it, but in the end, I liked the stamp and deceided not to pursue further..... |

Yeah, mistakes are made, things are missed. PF does a decent job, but nobody is perfect. Caveat emptor. |
