Just when I was beginning to think there would be no more surprises I pulled this Latvian stamp out of one of the albums I got last weekend.

When I turned it over I found this...

...printed on the backs of unfinished banknotes, according to Scott's, "of the government of Colonel Bermondt-Avalov and on the so-called German 'Ober-Ost' money". With surcharge 1921 (SC#97).
Pretty awesome. But of course there's a footnote that excellent counterfeits exist.
Someone please tell me this one is legit. Finding too many counterfeits in this stash.

The "counterfeit" issue pertains to the surcharge, not the fact that the basic stamps were printed on unfinished currency. The basic stamp looks fine to me; they are of minimal value, and no philatelic forgeries are likely to exist.

The stamps are nice in larger blocks, so you can get a better picture of the note...same with the map stamps.

new12, if you bought a map stamp, with an apparently blank back, it could have been a copy from the map's margin, which is (perhaps perversely) more valuable than an example from the middle of the map.

However, it is also possible that you have a stamp with a similar appearance that wasn't printed on a map...
