Does anyone sell worldwide mixes in the 1840 to 1950 range? I just got a couple old Scott International albums that have these years. I'm just getting started in the worldwide arena and thought a mix would be a good way to get started.

or even country-specific, but preferably 1840-1950.

Find someone who is breaking up a Scott's International Volume I, which covers worldwide stamps 1840 to 1940 only. That will yield hundreds of small country-specific "collections."

"Typical" might be 5 stamps from Fiji, or 300 stamps from Belgium, or 125 from Canada, etc., etc. And country lots would probably not contain duplicates, maybe 5% at most.

I buy old Scott International Parts 1-3, take out what I need, and resell the rest as one lot on ebay. In fact I hope to put one on soon. Especially part Ones are quick sellers. it is the cheapest way to get your first 10,000 or so WW stamps. After a while, you stop getting anything to add to your album.

A good strategy.

I have done the same for 30 years, but just Part I. Can't tell you how many cinderellas, revenues, and interesting non-Scott items I've picked up from those many albums. And lots of collectors avoid Part I's in the first place, because they tend to be huge books, an overwhelming job that, in turn, requires a full set of Scott's. I say, bring 'em on!

If you are good at, you can usually break even, even after you have taken out what you want!

Those are good suggestions. I have looked on ebay and have found a few pages. Thanks.

philb, another good idea. I'm working on the 50 posts. Right now I would be interested in anything prior to 1950. Thanks.

My main concern is, if I were to buy a worldwide mix from a dealer, I'm thinking I would get mostly newer stuff since it seems that countries started flooding the stamp market beginning in the 60's as a way to make money. Therefore, it would be a waste of my money since I don't have and can't afford Scott International albums Part 3 - 44, or whatever it is. I talked to a dealer the other day and he told me it would costs thousands for those albums.

leoh, when I started purchasing box lots I made a lot of mistakes...much of what was in the lots was mint stamps from the 70's and 80's which I do not collect(my worldwide collecting ends in 1969) People like myself here can make up packets for the years you request from our duplicates..i do not have to make a profit from my hobby..but its nice to divest a few duplicates !

That's very kind, philb. I really appreciate it. This board has taught me a lot already. I haven't responded too much because I don't have any advice to offer, but I'll get there.

By the way, one member has already contacted me about providing some ww pre-1950.

Thanks, everyone.
