Hi,

I have a large number of cancelled definitive stamps to sort out. Some issues were printed on both types of paper.

Without the gum I can't differentiate Fasson from TRC. Although there is a description of both papers in the Unitrade Specialised Catalogue, I fail to sort my stock.

There must be an easy way to find which is which. A pic of both papers from the back of a same issue would probably help.

Any assistance to solve my problem would be appreciated.

Most Fasson stamps are coils.

I only collect mint stamps and the backs of pressure-sensitive gum sided coils are still on the plastic strip, so I can't scan them.

Do you know the cat. #'s of any P.V.A. gummed stamps by Fasson that I can scan for you?

Thanks for comments BlackJag, I believe that all Fasson paper stamps are self-adhesive.

In this tread I am interested in "used" stamps only, For now, I am trying to sort out used stamps 2135-2139 from self-adhesive booklets, printed by CBN and Lowe-Martin.

I know that used stamps (back of stamp) on Fasson paper are apparently smooth in comparison to Coated paper. However, when I physicaly check my stock, I am unable to see the difference. That is why I am looking for pics of both as an helping tool. If there is an easier way to identify the correct paper, I would like to know it.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Fasson is a brand name of Avery Dennison Co. for pressure-sensitive label paper, which is a laminate of coated paper and release paper. Avery also is one of the printers used by the BEP and any sheets or booklets of unused stamps that you may have that are imprinted "V......" were printed by AD and I would be very confident that they were printed on Fasson stock.

Check all your used stamps and you may also find some that show an imprint. Those with a V are Avery Dennison stamps. I am always on the alert for these and collect them as a sideline.

Coated paper, in the language of the trade, means paper that has been coated with clay and titanium dioxide formulas to add whiteness and other properties.

I'm not familiar with the terms CBN and Lowe-Martin, but suspect they are Canada companies. Stamp printers? Paper makers?

Thanks for your comments Dlambert1,

The stamps discussed above are Canadian stamps. The series 2135-2139 were printed by CBN on TRC paper, and also by Lowe-Martin on Fasson paper. Apparently, it is possible to differentiate used copies from each other, without inprints. My problem is that I don't know how.

Major, Coated Paper has slight indentations on the FRONT, while Fasson is smooth. I have these scan,s but will try to get better ones later.

Coated

Thanks for your help BeeSee,

I was checking the back of the stamps to find the difference in paper. From your pics, I now realize that I should compare the front.

I agree with BeeSee's scans as the method to see which is which.
Worked for me on the Queen Elizabeth II Permanent Booklet (2188 Fasson paper and 2188i TRC paper reprint).
