Just goes to show that getting a good Spanish cancel on stamp or cover is a practice in futility.

The one perfin appears to be GCC. If so, this was used by Garcia-Calamarte & Cia (Garcia-Calamarte & Co.) which was based out of Madrid.

Thank you folks! Smauggie are you saying its hard to find a good looking/clean & crisp cancell from Spain? Do perfins increase value on stamps or no not really?

For value, it depends on the collector. A Spain specialist will see these stamps as being premium for having a pefin. A worldwide collector might see them as faulty, and worth less than the stamp without the perfin.

I don't think it is the opposite of that...but there might be a better chance of finding someone who is interested in them now. And the Internet makes it easier to find that person.

I suspect most worldwide collectors still avoid perfins.

Perfins at one time were frowned on.

Now, they are quite collectible.

The rule of thumb I heard is that generally perfins would sell for less than their normal counterparts. As an example, if a stamp has a CV of $1.00, usually collector can expect to pay 50% of CV plus or minus a few cents. If the stamp was perfinned, then it was not uncommon for it to go for 25% or less. This isn't bad when you stop to think that they were once considered junk and now there are societies devoted to them.

Of course, there are always exceptons to the rule and sme perfins go for pretty good bucks.
