I posted about my collecting Gagarin stamps in my introduction, but I figured I should post again here. Does anyone else collect Yuri Gagarin stamps? It's the first page on my spreadsheet. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...wcVVYOEVaTmcThere are so many awesome ones, and a lot of ugly ones. :) I've been finding the newer African ones the hardest to find. So did I understand correctly that ALL of the stamps the UN issued for the 50th Anniversary of Manned Space Flight went into space on the space shuttle? Joe

Here's my best Gagarin item, a signed postcard with Polish stamps affixed and tied by an unfortunately unreadable cancel. The small box at lower right says (in Polish) "show extended until May 1 1961". I have no idea whether the signature is authentic or not, the item was found in what Rodney likes to call a "phossick box". Sorry for the poor quality, the scanner is currently indisposed ... Since you brought the subject up, that DDR stamp is truly ugly. A worse combination of colors could not have been chosen and the design ------well what can we say? It's awful. However I do realize that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there can't be many beholders of beauty of that stamp. |

THIS one from North Korea, July 1961, is one of the ugliest ones in my opinion. This one from Hungary is one of my favorites, though this photo doesn't do it justice and my scanner broke recently, just before I received mine. |

Ryan said " I have no idea whether the signature is authentic or not" Your postcard was produced and signed in Russia as far as I know. Later used in various shows etc(including Poland)with stamps attached for philatelic purposes. Gagarin was in Poland in 1961...all over the world really. A really nice guy apparently who would oblige anyone asking for an autograph. His signature was simple so could be copied... here is one I know is genuine (unfortunately it is unused) for comparison. He has a distinctive "trail" to his autograph that is not obvious on your card but there is no reason to believe yours is not genuine as he did sign a lot. In the UK your card might be worth 500 pounds++? |

" ALL of the stamps the UN issued for the 50th Anniversary of Manned Space Flight went into space on the space shuttle?" questioned Joseph. I believe the total ammount actually on the space shuttle was zero... and they counted them twice to make sure perhaps you meant the USPS who planned to send half a million or so stamp covers into orbit...later cut back to about 160,000 or so that did make it into space via STS-8 ? |

I just got my sheet of 2011 Sri Lanka Gagarin stamps. I already had a single, but there's a cool label strip through the middle. They're CIRCULAR. Cool, huh? And I got the sheet for just under $4 with free shipping. Getting an awesome deal is as exciting for me as the stamps themselves. :) |

This is part of the mini sheet from Israel which is done in three languages. The Sri Lanka sheet is great... I can also recommend the one from Belarus. |

Those Israeli ones I've not had an easy time finding. I saw one sheet, only once on ebay and it was $50+ I have a single of the Belarus 2011 stamp, and the SS's of the same design from Russia and Bosnia. There's one from Ecquador with the same design also, but I've not been able to find it. ^The black part at the top left corner is actually cut away, which is neat. I haven't looked at them side-by-side before, I didn't notice that the Bosnia one is a slightly different version of the same illustration. EDIT: It's been too long since I've used a forum, and I've been using Facebook too much in the meantime. I keep looking for a "Like" button on the replies here. :) |

Here is an image of a stamp depicting the Yuri A. Gagarin Medal and symbols of spaceflight, designed by Russian artist Rim Strelnikov (1932- ), printed by photogravure, and issued by Russia (USSR) on March 30, 1971 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Gagarin's historic flight, Scott No. 3840, Zagorski No. 3916. - nethryk |
