I picked up this sweet pair with Gagarin and Shepard from New Caledonia at our local stamp show this afternoon.

I started a seperate thread for this Gagarin-related question. I found a Kazakhstan stamp that seems to have an image of Gagarin in the background and I'm looking for opinions.

Yuri A. Gagarin and Soviet Union flag, airmail stamp designed by Romanian artist Dimitrie Stiubei (1901-1989), printed by lithography, and issued by Romania on January 15, 1964 as one of a set of ten stamps depicting astronauts and cosmonauts, along with their nations' flags, Scott No. C151.

I really like that Romania series. Even now, there's still such animosity between US and USSR/Russia that it's surprising to see Cosmonauts and Astronauts together.

Here are images of the two airmail stamps in a set honoring Yuri Gagarin, designed by Cyril Bouda (1901-1984), combined engraved and photogravure, and issued by Czechoslovakia on June 22, 1961, Scott Nos. C51 & C52.

Here's a USSR cover commemorating the 30th anniversary of Gagarin's flight, with additional cancellations commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Baikonur space port ("cosmodrome") in Kazakhstan.

cover franked with Kazakh stamps and cancelled by Russian/USSR postmarks - not uncommon in early-mid 1990s
