While doing some postal history research I came across a reference to a bi-monthly magazine put out by the Stamp Collector's Exchange Club that was started in Canada in 1935 by N.C. Carmichael. Apparently it lasted for 23 years, which puts its termination date at 1958.

Notable Canadian mentions in the magazine include Fred Jarrett (Order of Canada), K. Bileski and Jim Webb. Here is a link to Vance Auctions, which has an article about the club:

All in all it sounds like it was a pretty nifty club/magazine given that it had over 5000 members world-wide. Since it was around into the late 1950's are there any SCF members who were part of it? Can anyone enlighten us with any clips from articles or whatever?

Interesting cynical.

Did you know that Fred Jarrett was a Huntsville, Ontario boy? I found that out several years ago.

Do you also remember the stamp store that was in the subway in Toronto. Me and a friend used to go down there as often as we could, to go through the stamp boxes and pick out stamps for pennies apiece. Vance Carmichael used to be there frequently too to assist another dealer behind the counter, which was Boris, but can't remember his last name. I thought that the subway store was also Carmichael Stamps (?) If I remember correctly it was on Yonge & Bloor (?)

Some nice interesting information on the thread you provided too. Regarding the R.M.S. Nascopie, I have a couple of covers from that vessel and it sure does have a colourful history.

Bujutsu: I did not know that Fred Jarrett was from Huntsville. I will put a post-it note of that in my copy.

I sort of did the site a dis-service in that the link doesn't display all the articles. Here is a link that shows the list. I figured you might be interested in the Canadian Navy article.

Thanks for that Cynical.

As you say, I was quite interested in the navy section and was pleased to see an image of the HMCS Niobe. I have several postcards with images of both the HMCS "Niobe" and "Rainbow". One of the cards is inscribed HMS Rainbow while it was still part of the Royal Navy.

I have faint recollection of this being discussed on SCF before,
my searching failed to raise it however. :(

Rod: that was my feeling too - that I had seen this on SCF before. Did all the searches but could only come up with members who were starting stamp exchanges.

I came across it looking for anything related to Byng Inlet, Ontario. I hit upon this:

A Rare Postmark Style [Byng Inlet] by Frank W. Campbell that apparently appeared in the magazine in 1954 (v19 no1).

I perhaps should have put it on the main forum but thought that the chances, on a relative basis, of there having been Canadian members was greater. Anyway, no luck so far.

Was this a large version 'split-ring (broken-circle) type of Byng Inlet cynical?

Bujutsu: you might be right. My first thought was that it might not have anything to do with the south shore Byng Inlet post office but the rare thin-barred squared circle postmark from the north shore post office called Byng Inlet North.

Hopefully someone will set me straight.

Most likely cynical.

Byng Inlet North was the former name of Byng Inlet. Byng Inlet closed July 21, 2006 permanently.
