On March 15, 1969 the 50th anniversary of the American Legion was commemorated with the issuance of a stamp designed by Robert Hallock (Scott 1369).

Quote:
The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, servicemembers and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States. Membership swiftly grew to over 1 million, and local posts sprang up across the country. Today, membership stands at over 2.4 million in 14,000 posts worldwide. The posts are organized into 55 departments: one each for the 50 states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines.

Over the years, the Legion has influenced considerable social change in America, won hundreds of benefits for veterans and produced many important programs for children and youth.

This stamped envelope was issued on August 3, 1983 -- it is a stark reminder of the dangers associated with military service in both war and peace.

In the United States, there are an estimated 100,000 veterans with spinal cord injury or disease. There is an untold number of veterans who suffered amputation, disfigurement or other disabling injury in service of their country. These selfless men and women are deserving of our recognition, gratitude, and assistance.

Israel is issuing a memorial day stamp each year depicting one of the many monuments commemorating the soldiers who have died while serving their country.

Here are some examples from the seventies and early eighties:

The King's African Rifles (KAR) was a multi-battalion British colonial regiment raised from the various British possessions in East Africa from 1902 until independence in the 1960s. Rank and file were Africans called askaris, while most officers were seconded from British Army regiments. Here is an image of a stamp depicting an askari wearing the regimental fez, engraved and printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., and issued for use in Nyasaland Protectorate on September 1, 1945 to honor the King's African Rifles, Scott No. 69.

On December 12, 1986 the United States issued a postal card (Scott UX114) recognizing the 350-year heritage of the National Guard. Designed by Bradbury Thompson, the card's indicium was taken from the painting The First Muster, by Don Troiani. The first muster in 1637 took place after the December 13, 1636 Massachusetts General Court declaration established three regiments of "citizen soldiers" within the colony to defend against enemy attack and preserve villages established in the colony per English militia tradition.
