It is marked by a series of milestones along the road network between Sainte-Mère-Église and Utah Beach in Lower Normandy, and Bastogne in the Belgian province of Luxembourg, marking the route taken by the Allied forces. The Armée d'Afrique (Army of Africa) was an unofficial but commonly used term for those portions of the French Army recruited from or normally stationed in French North Africa (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia) from 1830 until the end of the Algerian War in 1962. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a war memorial in Algiers honoring the Army of Africa, designed and engraved by Albert Decaris, and issued for use in Algeria on April 11, 1952, Scott No. 246.

Following is the first Great Britain stamp submission to this thread -- the 1983 British Army issue (Scott 1022-26). The insert card provides information on each of the units depicted on the stamps. I was fortunate to receive this cover from a very generous SCF member.

The War Memorial in Floriana, designed by Maltese sculptor Louis Naudi, was dedicated on November 11, 1938 to commemorate the 592 Maltese heroes who lost their lives during the Great War, 1914-1918. The square-faced obelisk, which is 15.25 metres high, was constructed entirely of Maltese limestone flairs. Here is an image of a stamp depicting the War Memorial, engraved and printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., Ltd., and issued for use in Malta on February 9, 1956, Scott No. 249.
