its a Crete revenue stamp of the first series ,it was for trade licenses and the funds were collected for education [ one author says if it was for education it needs a additional overprint of "XET"

This is a regular revenue from autonomous Crete. The basic design is the same as the 5 lepta postage stamp but in this new bistre colour (as was the case for the whole set).

The first regular series of Crete revenues had no overprints. This overprinted stamp is from a later issue that reflected the self-declared unofficial union with Greece.

I can't agree with some of the comments about trade licences and education, as both of these had revenues with different overprints (or different stamps completely). Some of the other Crete revenues were overprinted on postage stamps.

I also have some of the earlier local revenues from the British, Russian and Cretan administrations in Crete which are quite crude in design. I'll try to scan some in the next day or so when I'm at home and have some time.

Hi floortrader,

I'd be interested to say the article you mention. My main reference is the second edition of Feenstra's Crete handbook.

Crete is my main collecting area so it's always interesting to see topics like this.

All the best,

Thanks floortrader - that's a very useful reference.

The key point about the trade licence revenues is that they have the overprint (in Greek) "Foros Epitedeumatos".

They can have the "Ellenikon Basileion" or not (as can other revenues).
