Hi all,

The covers an oddity I discovered amongst a QEII collection I was going through, Barrow on Soar is a 5 min drive for me and a pleasant country village, I'm interested in anything you can tell me about it , especially the surname as I have the parish census for 1901 but can make it out,

Thanks

The last name does appear to be Mashú, with an accent at the end.

Kindly show us the back when you display a cover. It may be very straightforward but it is part of the picture. If there is nothing on back, it should be stated. I, for one, would be curious to see a Barrow on Soar receiving mark, if there is one.

I have little to add with regard to the cover, but the topic caught my eye because I was born and raised in Pretoria.

It does however seem to have been sent by a G Mashú, Military Governor's Office Pretoria to a Mrs W L Mashú - a son to a mother, or a husband to a wife?

Unfortunately, can't make out G Mashú's second initial, or the word that follows, possibly the second part of a double barrelled surname.
Clive

I also came up with Martin. There were many Martins but there was a Gerald Hamilton Martin (lieutenant) in the King's Royal Rifle Corps.
He didn't cross the t's. Also in the lower left corner it looks like
the sender GH Martin lieut. Again no cross in the H...
possible ?

I think your second word is an abbreviation of Lieutenant.

Sorry, perf, saw your comment after I'd added mine

The "r"s in Barrow do not match the third letter in the addressee or senders name. I am not sure they match the "n"s in England either. It might be easier to search for the Lieutenant, if you have access to regimental rosters. I find reading some handwriting difficult even though I was taught cursive (longhand in my day). I wonder if young people of today will have even more difficulties in the future.

I would agree with to Mrs W.T. Martin from G.H. Martin Lieut.

Nicer cursive than my undecipherable (to anyone else) script.

The R's in Martin and Barrow do not correspond.

Definitely appears to be Lieut. Gerald Hamilton Martin. Employed as Secretary to the Military Governor of Pretoria from Jul 00 to Mar 02.

Well done, 22crows and rod! So much for my handwriting reading. Good research trumps all.
