I posted this cover on another thread when I first got it, but thought I should start a fresh train of thought here.
Can any of you give me an idea what the postal rate for this stampless folded letter may have been in 1841? The rate is handwritten in the upper right corner, and I can't make it out.

The letter was sent by John Lyons, a Niagara Crown Agent who lived in Niagara-on-the-Lake to Samuel Street a prominent business man in Chippawa near Niagara Falls. The distance is about 29km between towns, assuming of course that Lyons was writing from his home.
Any thoughts?

Interesting. Chippawa Ontario was not founded until 1850. First Nation in 1841 ?

A very active settlement from early on.
Here's a history of the place...

The recipient of this letter, Samuel Street is mentioned in this chronology as a founder of a railroad from Chippawa to Queenston. Not a great distance today, but back then a long way to haul your products.
Chippawa was also the home of Laura Secord, the famous War of 1812 heroine.

Glad you suggested that site Lordenning. I have been in there on different occasions to check out various facets of Canadian postal history.

I find their site quite interesting.

Hmmm. That looks familiar.

Yes, the rate there is 3 pence. The website posted above only goes up to 1851.
A subsequent page on the website states:

"In 1851, the Canadian Provincial Parliament introduced a uniform letter rate of 3 pence per half-ounce, for all distances conveyed within the colony. Letters could still be sent paid or unpaid."

In fact it shows a number of covers with a numeral three very similar to yours.
