Royal Library of Belgium



The Royal Library of Belgium (Koninklijke Bibliotheek Belgiė) is one of the most important cultural institutions in Belgium.
The library has a history that goes back to the age of the Dukes of Burgundy.

Burning of the Library of the University of Algiers



The library of the University of Algiers was burned down on 7.6.1962 by the Organisation de l'armée secrete (OAS),
a militant underground organization. 112500 books were destroyed.

The burning of the library resulted in a number of Muslim countries issuing postage stamps commemorating this event.

75 years National Library Filip Vi¹njię in Bijeljina, Bosnia and Hercegovina

The National Library Filip Vi¹njię was founded in 1932 by the initiative of prominent intellectuals from Bijeljina.
It is the parent library for the region and composed of 30 schools libraries, two faculty and two university libraries.

Raczyński library, Poznań, Poland


overprint: the Gordon Bennett balloonflight competition in Warsaw

The Raczynski Library was founded by Count Edward Raczynski (1786-1845), a social activist, patron of art and science, writer, and publisher.
The opening of the Library took place on 5.5.1829 in a building build with his financial support.
In 1945 the Library was destroyed by German soilders and 90% of the fondus was destroyed.

Reopening of the Vatican Apostolic Library - 2010



The Vatican Apostolic Library was reopened in 2010 to scholars after renovation to improve its cataloguing and security measures.
The renovation lasted three years and cost of $11.5 million.

500 years of the University Library, Copenhagen



Copenhagen University Library was founded in 1582 and it is the oldest library in Denmark.
In 1482 the first books were donated to the Library of Peder Albertsen, Deputy University Chancellor.
Later colletion was increased by books from the Convent Libraries and the collections of books of the Danish kings.
Since 1961 the library has been housed in a building of its own.

The Jagiellonian library in Cracow



On stamp is The Jagiello library court with the monument of Mikolaj Kopernik.
Jagiellonian Library with almost 7 million volumes is one of the largest and most famous libraries in Poland.
It has a large collection of medieval manuscripts.
It was opened in 1364 when the Cracow Academy was established.

National Library of China



National Library of China in Beijing is the national library of the People`s Republic of China.
It is the largest library in Asia and one of the largest in the world.
It has a collection of over 31 million items.

Biblioteca Ambrosiana



The Biblioteca Ambrosiana is a historic library in Milan, Italy.
It is named after Ambrose, the patron saint of Milan
and was founded by Cardinal Federico Borromeo (1564-1631).
First room of library was opened in 1609 as the second public library in Europe.
In the house of library is also the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, the Ambrosian art gallery.

The University Library of Louvain, Belgium



The University Library of Louvain founded in 1426 was destroyed in both World War I and World War II.



After destroying during WW1 in 1914 it was rebuilt in 1928 by American architect Whitney Warren.
The tower houses is one of the largest carillons in the world of 48 bells.


25th anniversary of the Louvain Bible Colloquium

In 1940 the Library of the University of Louvain was again destroyed by Germans.
After World War II was rebuilt in accordance with the earlier Warren Whitney design.

The Biblioteca Nacional do Brasil



The Biblioteca Nacional do Brasil is the largest library in Latin America and the 7th largest in the world.
Its collections include about 9 million items.
It was founded in 1810 with the collection from The Royal Library from Lisbon.
