I noticed on ebay these sell well. My knowledge of these stamps is zero. Thanks.

Here is the back, this is with some lighter fluid dripped on it. I could see no watermark, I did not soak it in fluid. Not sure where this leaves me. I may have bought a fake.

There are many different printings. Also, the ones that do sell usually have 3 solid margins and margins are very important on these.

I haven't seen the back, but this is already a "B" copy, and maybe a "C," depending on what's behind the curtain. Still, every CGH triangle has its price, and a strong tradition of mystique to fall back upon.

Thanks for the replies, the back is far from perfect, not too bad though. Mystique is good, maybe it can make up for a bad margin a little. I am new at buying stamps I saw this one, going for six bucks. I bid and got it for seven. Based on what similar ones sold for I feel like I got a good deal.

We all get wrapped up in values, but if it makes you happy it is worth it.

Well, in any case you got a STEAL! It is #6, 6a, 15, or 15a, the cheapest of which catalogs $210 in 2008 Scott. I would pay 3% for such a copy anytime. I don't know the shades well enough to even guess which number it is. There's a small chance it's a forgery with a fake cancel.

Oh, OK, I'll guess. My guess is #15. Now let's hear from an expert.

Thanks Doug, I saw some stuff saying these are the subjects of forgery. I would not be hard to fool as this is first I have seen of these stamps. The seller seemed legit. Stamps doesn't look funky, (I think.) My local library doesn't have an international stamp cat. in stock and I am too cheap to buy one. I would rather spend my money on new stamps.

There are many forgeries of this stamp abound. As soon as you receive the stamp, dip it and check for a anchor watermark. This is the first clue to verify a real one. I will try and get back to you tonight after checking my reference for other markers.

Thanks I'll take a look. I need to pick up some lighter fluid, I read that works fine without damaging stamp. I am trying to find out what I am looking for other than it looks like an anchor. I took a peek at back of stamp holding it up to the window and there it was! An anchor, then I realized it was showing through from the front design.

I should add that the color is exceptional. A second test would be to compare that color with other copies; maybe some member(s) can post a few examples.

"An anchor, then I realized it was showing through from the front design." Not sure what you mean, but you can see the anchor from either the front or the back of the stamp, not just from the back.

Thanks for the tip. The anchor I saw was the one she is sitting on. I will get some fluid and see if I have an anchor. This is fun, I will be disappointed if it turns out I bought a fake but at seven bucks not the end of world. It takes some keen eyes, or a lot of courage to buy one of these for serious money without some certification of authenticity.

From the Sandafayre archives, here are 8 copies of the 1/- green for comparison; 5 are shown as singles, 3 are part of larger lots. I'll leave the analysis to a Commonwealth expert. This is about as many copies as you would expect to find in one place:

Thanks great links and info. These stamps appear to be a real challenge as they are so similar. Now I know what to look for in a watermark. Just have to get some fluid.
