Read this article and be aware of a scam buyers can pull on you.

http://codenerdz.com/blog/2012/12/0...think-again/

The guy in the article was selling an iPhone 5, but this can apply to item sold on ebay.

EDIT: changed sellers to buyers.

Son of a puppy dog thats a brutal read and makes you really question paypal. As much as the read goes into great detail about the particular case and I am sure there are many it also draws attention to more scammers of a step by step how to screw the whole system. Kind of like watching a cop show that basically shows criminals how to get away with crimes. I will definatly be wary of high dollar transactions.

When I read this I'm glad I don't use paypal and/or buy/sell
online at all.

Now this guy knows all the ins and outs about buying and selling
online and still gets ripped off.
What chance would a poor naive like me have.

I have had only one incident in more than 2300 transactions, and I taught that buyer a lesson he'll never forget. I'm not saying how.

I feel sure that fraud and deception are much more prevalent than even 3 years ago.

On another auction site, where you don't have to pay with PayPal, I received a bad check and after ignoring my warning, I listed it for sale -- the check showed the buyer's address, telephone, and of course, his account number. He then coughed up IMMEDIATELY.

Most of the stamps I buy from ebay are pretty low value things, so I am not too worried. Where I almost got taken for a ride was dealing people living in Ukraine claiming to be stamp collectors. One gentlemen claims he went to the stamp club and already purchased the stamps I needed and I just had to send him a check. When I informed him that I had purchased the stamps elsewhere and never asked him to buy them for me, just to give me a price, I never heard from him again.

Just goes to show what I've said a million times before on SCF and elsewhere......sell on the forums !

Never a problem that way...I'm living proof.

By the way, it is still possible to pay by other means on ebay. I am in the process of doing it now.

Londonbus1....if I win that is !

doug2222: I'll have to keep that one in mind. Luckily, I haven't had to deal with a bad check in 10 years or so from back in the wild west days of ebay.

As for that linked story, I was emailed that earlier by a friend. While the story is frightening, I would really like to see some hard data as to how many ebay sellers get hit with chargebacks and also see the data by catagories of items. Like in the story, I feel that many of the chargebacks are for high profile items like cell phones, lap tops and other Apple/Computer products - more so than stamps. However, stories are not data, but getting anything quanitative out of Ebay/PayPal would be difficult.

As for anyone who has sold stamps/covers on ebay for any length of time, 99%+ of the buyers are excellent and there's never a problem. Why let the occasional rotten egg be a conplete turn off and throw the baby out with the bathwater? You can have a scammer seller or buyer at any form of venue with it be in person or on the net, but I rather believe the majority of people are honest, while at the same time take the commonsense precautions when you deal with someone. The worst thing I ever have to deal with is inefficent and unrealible postal systems (my nemesis is the postal system of Moscow, Russia).

However, I do wish Paypal/Ebay would take some better measures to protect sellers, i.e. don't return the payment until the buyer returns the item (sounds like a commonsense solution, but alas - even Amazon has this feature) . The feedback system needs a complete overhaul. Delcampe has a far superior feedback system that could be a working model.

I have four good friends who operate as dealers at various levels of activity and accomplishment. ALL FOUR have been scammed out of $500+ once or more in their "careers".

By the way, when listing someone's bad check, offer it for double its face value, and specify payment by U.S. Postal Money Order ONLY. Almost makes you WISH for bad checks.
