After decade away from the hobby (and having sold my first collection) I am getting back into philately again. Since I am pretty much starting from a blank slate (save a couple collections inherited from my dad a couple years back) I am deciding what my collecting parameters are going to be. One question I have is, given that prices in Scott for most nations after 1945 (and some several years earlier) are for never hinged values on unused (and I'm planning to collect unused, not used, for post-1919 stamps) I am wondering what kind of a discount from catalog value would be expected for stamps that are hinged but within the earlier part of the never-hinged window (up to say the late 1950s). Like for say later Geroge VI or first Elizabeth II defin issues from various colonies or the late-1940s French colonial definitive series.

Generally speaking anything hinged late George VI / early Elizabeth II, perhaps apart from the key values, should be readily available at 50% of catalogue value.

I price ANY MINT STAMP that has a light hinge mark on the gum at 50% and where I happen to have stamps with a hinge remainder at 25% cv.

regards,

Rod

Unitrade specifies a discount of 50% for modern Canadian mint hinged stamps. A bit odd that for the later listings for stamps that are priced both MNH and hinged, the discount is only 20%.

I have an Israeli catalogue (can't remember off the top of my head which one it was, though) that specified a discount of only 20%. And I'm pretty sure that Facit Scandinavia wants a discount of 80%!
